Something about Jack Johnson playing an indoor arena in July does not sound like the most ideal scenario. I understand for most musicians or bands playing Madison Square Garden is a rite of passage. But when you think Jack Johnson, you think bbq’s, ice cold beer, summer nights. Not subways, $10 warm plastic beer bottles, or Manhattan humidity. Personally, I think he should have played Jones Beach and held off till the fall for his first MSG gig. But what do I know. I can’t really criticize a guy who donates every penny of profit to his Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation!
This was my third time shooting shot Jack Johnson and I can’t say there’s really much to it. He rarely moves further than ten feet from the mic stand. He plays guitar. He sings. Basically you are completely reliant on the lighting and stage design for interesting photos.
You can see more of my images of Jack at SoundSpike. Or just check out the newly launched SoundSpike site, which was formerly known as LiveDaily. Big shout out to Hali McGrath who’s been working tirelessly to get the new site up with fresh content and killer photos and taking care of her nationwide fleet of photographers!!
